The Calathea is a very beautiful houseplant with many unique species. The Calathea plant is known for its many different colors and patterns. Some Calathea plants have purple oval leaves and others have green leaves with beautiful patterns. The Calathea plant originates from the tropical forests in South America such as the Amazon. In these areas, the Calathea stands  on the ground sheltered under the large jungle trees. This makes the Calathea a real shade plant.

The Calathea plant is also called the living houseplant. The houseplant closes its leaves at night and during the day they come back to life. So it is possible that you sometimes hear sounds coming from your Calathea plant! Instead of a pet, you can also just take a Calathea ! The Calathea comes from areas with high humidity and therefore likes to get enough water and be sprayed occasionally. So it is a houseplant that needs good care! If you take good care of your Calathea , you can enjoy its beautiful colors and vibrant character for a long time!

Caring for a Calathea

What is the best way to take care of your Calathea? As mentioned before, the care of the Calathea is  quite intensive.  Calathea care consists mainly of good watering. This shade plant comes from a tropical area with high humidity and therefore likes sufficient water and humidity. The Calathea is a houseplant that  needs a lot of maintenance with a little love, but if you give it that you can enjoy the beautiful colors and patterns of the Calathea plant for a long time  . So read our care tips for the Calathea carefully!

Watering a Calathea

Are you planning to water your Calathea? Read our tips carefully because the Calathea is quite demanding when it comes to water! The Calathea likes to get a little water at least 1 time a week. The Calathea is a plant that needs a lot of attention and care so keep an eye on it! Too little water will  not do the Calathea any good. Because the Calathea comes from a tropical area, the plant also likes to be sprayed. Spraying a few times a week does wonders for the Calathea!

You can best see if the Calathea plant is thirsty by sticking a finger in the ground. This checks whether the soil at the roots is still moist. If this is not the case, it is time to give the Calathea some water! Too much water can cause root rot to occur in the houseplant and of course we do not want that!

The perfect place for a Calathea

The location of the Calathea is important to keep your plant beautiful for a long time. Therefore, read our tips carefully so that you can enjoy your beautiful Calathea houseplant for a long time! The Calathea plant grows at the bottom of large tropical jungles. This spot offers the plant a lot of shade and that is why the Calathea is  a real shade plant. So make sure you put the Calathea in a place where there are no sun rays! The Calathea is therefore a good bedroom plant because the Calathea also purifies the air!

For example, a spot on the closet in the living room is perfect, but a place in front of the window is not optimal for the Calathea. Also, the Calathea plant does not want to be above a radiator. The plant needs high humidity to shine, which is why the plant loves to be sprayed! You can see when the Calathea gets too much sunlight when the leaves get brown edges. The perfect location for a Calathea plant is therefore a place with shade, out of the draft and away from the radiator, and high humidity!

 Repotting a Calathea

Are you planning to repot your Calathea? Pay attention with the following tips so that your Calathea care is optimal! The Calathea plant does not need to be repotted quickly. Once every two / three years is sufficient. Repot the houseplant only in the Spring. In the Spring, the Calathea has  extra energy, so the plant recovers faster.

Make sure that the new pot for the Calathea is 20% larger than the old pot size. This gives the Calathea plant more room to grow and there will be more soil to store water in. These Calathea care tips are important to follow so that you can enjoy your tropical houseplant for a long time!

Pruning a Calathea

Pruning a Calathea plant is not very complicated. If you take good care of the houseplant, it will not be necessary to  prune the Calathea. If the leaves of the Calathea start to droop, this is a sign that the plant needs water. If the plant is dry for too long, some leaves will not survive. These leaves can be pruned by cutting the close to the trunk at an angle.

If there are dead leaves on the Calathea plant, they can also easily be cut off close to the trunk. This way you ensure that the Calathea sends its energy to the healthy leaves instead of to the dead leaves!

Nutrition for your Calathea

The Calathea often produces new leaves in the spring. It is therefore advisable in these months to feed the plant a bit more. In the winter months, the Calathea plant is in hibernation and additional feeding is not necessary. In addition to promoting leaf growth through nutrition, it also ensures that the leaves remain beautifully colored. Make sure you do  not give the Calathea too much nutrition, this is bad for the plant and the roots.  Calathea care in terms of nutrition is therefore only important in the spring!

Diseases in the Calathea

It is good to know whether the Calathea is susceptible to plant diseases. Fortunately, the Calathea is  a houseplant that does not suffer much from diseases. However, spider mites can occur in the winter months. Spider mite at the Calathea can be caused by too much dry air around the plant. This can be prevented by spraying the plant while taking care of  the Calathea.
