The Trachycarpus palm is an indoor and outdoor plant that originally comes from the Himalayan Mountains, where it grows at impressive altitudes. The distribution area of trachycarpus extends over the whole of Asia. The nickname for the Trachycarpus is Hemp Palm or Chinese Hemp Palm. It belongs to the Arecaceae family. The palm Trachycarpus Fortunei is a well-known houseplant because of its beautiful fan-shaped leaves and also a hardy plant that survives our European winters well outside! The Trachycarpus is a striking plant with beautiful fan-shaped leaves. It brings with it a summery atmosphere, even on dark days and in winter. The hemp palm Trachycarpus Fortunei is a versatile plant as it can stand both indoors and outdoors. The Trachycarpus can stay outside at temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius.

Trachycarpus Fortunei Care

Trachycarpus is a plant that wants to be cared for. Since this houseplant is a real sun worshipper, it needs a lot of water. Especially in the summer months, the soil in which the trachycarpus stands must not dry out under any circumstances. But make sure that you do not give the Trachycarpus too much water. When cared for in the winter months, the soil may dry out a little at times, but should not be dry for weeks. To check if your trachycarpus needs fresh water, you can put your finger in the soil and feel if the soil is dry up to two centimeters deep. If that's the case, water them. If you water your trachycarpus palm too much, a layer of water can accumulate at the bottom of the pot and cause root rot. Of course, you should avoid this.

The amount and frequency of casting depends on various factors

Important: ambient temperature, light intensity and pot size. We recommend keeping a close eye on your Trachycarpus palm in the first few weeks after purchase. If you notice that the soil feels a little dry after 5 days, next time you should water with a little more water, the earth is still moist, you should water less.

Spraying the Trachycarpus

We definitely advise you to spray your Trachycarpus with water weekly. Especially if you place this plant in the house. This not only promotes the development of the plant, but also removes dust from the leaves. And perhaps the most important advantage is the prevention of pests.

The best location for trachycarpus

The Trachycarpus is a true sun worshipper and needs sun to stay healthy. The ideal location is therefore a place with sufficient light. You can set up the Trachycarpus both indoors and outdoors under full sun. However, it is important that the Trachycarpus Wagnerianus palm does not stand in the wind, otherwise the leaves could break. In the house, the plant needs at least 5 hours of sunlight per day, - the best way to do this is a south-facing window.

We had already mentioned that the Trachycarpus Fortunei is hardy. Nevertheless, we would like to point out that the plant should be placed in very severe winters with temperatures below -10 degrees Celsius or protected with special winter covers.

Repotting the trachycarpus

Spring is the best time to repot the palm tree. Trachycarpus palm trees can recover best at this time of year. You should repot every 3 years in a pot that is 20% larger than the original pot. The more the root ball can grow, the better it can withstand low temperatures and the lower the risk of it drying out. If the pot is a little too large, you can put hydro grains in the bottom of the pot and fill the rest with palm soil or universal potting soil. It is important to use enough potting soil so that many nutrients can be absorbed.

Trachycarpus: additional nutrients necessary?

It is not necessary to provide the trachycarpus with additional nutrients, but it can help the plant develop faster. We recommend fertilizing only in the spring months; use palm fertilizer for this. Never put more than indicated in the earth. In the winter months, fertilizer can not be absorbed. Unabsorbed nutrients can damage the roots because fertilizer is very acidic.

The leaves of my Trachycarpus are discoloring!

The leaves can turn yellow-brown, which is a sign of too little water. Adjust your watering accordingly. The Trachycarpus Fortunei Wagnerianus may also develop black leaf tips; a sign of too much water. The lower leaves will discolor over time and can be cut off, they have their best time behind them. However, never prune the trunk!

Diseases of trachycarpus

A common disease in Trachycarpus plants are mealybugs. If you find this, you should act immediately. Remove the affected leaves and treat the palm tree with a mild soap if necessary. To preventively protect your Trachycarpus Fortunei from vermin, spray it regularly.

Is trachycarpus poisonous?

The Trachycarpus is non-toxic, which makes it a truly animal-friendly houseplant. However, we do not recommend consuming the leaves or other parts of the plant. You can buy the Trachycarpus Fortunei even if you have cats!
