    The Ficus or rubber plant is a real hip houseplant! The Ficus is a plant with many different species. So there is a nice Rubber plant for everyone! The Ficus is characterized by its trendy color combinations and minimalist character. The rubber plant is available in many different sizes. For example, you can buy a large Ficus, such as the Ficus Lyrata, but also a small Ficus, such as the Ficus elastica!

    The Ficus plant is a real favorite among plant lovers. They can be found in every stylish home nowadays! The Ficus is also a plant that does not need a lot of care. This makes the rubber plant a fun and relatively easy houseplant.  

    Caring for a Ficus plant

    Are you planning to take care of your Ficus? Read our tips carefully for the best ficus care. This way you can enjoy your rubber plant for a long time! The Ficus plant needs regular maintenance . If you water the Ficus regularly and make sure that the soil is not completely dry, it should be all right between you and the Ficus plant. 

    Watering a Ficus

    If you are going to water the Ficus, it is good to know how you can best do that. A Rubber plant does not need a lot of care, but it does need better water every week to stay alive. Care of the Ficus mainly comes down to watering 1 time a week. A little water will be enough for the Ficus to grow. Ficuses are generally small plants that also have a small soil root ball.

    If you are not sure whether your rubber plant needs water, it is smart to put a finger in the soil around the Ficus. If you feel that the soil around the roots of the Ficus is dry, it's time to add some water! If you feel a lot of humidity, it is better to wait a while before watering the rubber plant. If there is a constant layer of water at the roots, the roots of the Ficus can rot. We don't want this! In short, the Ficus care when it comes to watering is not very difficult. It mainly comes down to watering 1 time a week and making sure that the roots of the rubber plant are not in a layer of water!

    The optimal location for a Ficus

    A good location for the Ficus is very important to stimulate healthy growth. The Ficus plant has a great need for light. It is therefore advisable to place the rubber plant close to a window so that the plant absorbs a lot of sun rays. Be careful that you do not immediately put the Ficus plant in full light after purchase. The Ficus first has to get used to the new light. If you immediately put the plant in full sun rays for a longer period of time, the rubber plant can burn! So after the Ficus is used to it, you can put a few hours a day in full sun .

    Repotting a Ficus

At this time of year, the rubber plant has a bit more energy to repair any damage and to get used to its new environment.

The new pot in which you put the Ficus houseplant must be at least 20% larger than the old pot. This gives the Ficus extra room to grow.     To keep your houseplant Ficus beautiful and healthy, it is important to occasionally prune ugly or dead leaves off the plant. The rubber plant drops its leaves if the plant gets too little light or after the plant has been placed in a different place. The Ficus plant also drops leaves if too much water is given, so be careful with that!

    If you notice that your houseplant Ficus is losing some leaves, it is advisable to put the plant a little closer to the window and to only water the rubber plant when the soil really feels dry again. The leaves of the Ficus houseplant can also turn brown. This is often the result of too much or too little water. The ficus can sometimes have a yellow leaf by nature. Too many yellow leaves in the rubber plant can be a sign that there are no more nutrients in the soil. It is then advisable to give some food.

    Nutrition for the Ficus plant

    Feeding the Ficus during care is something that does not have to be done often. The rubber plant does not need any nutrition at all in the winter because the plant is resting. Also in the beginning, the Ficus does not need nutrition because the plant can live for 2 months on nutrition from the potting soil around the plant. In the spring and summer you can give the Ficus plant some nutrition to stimulate growth. This is not necessarily necessary and it is extremely important that you do not give the rubber plant too much nutrition!

    Diseases in the Ficus

    Unfortunately, the Ficus plant can also get sick. The Ficus can sometimes suffer from pests on the leaves. These, often lice, secrete a sticky substance that sticks to the leaves of the Ficus or even ends up on the floor. Since prevention is better than cure, it is smart to spray the rubber plant in warmer months. This ensures that the pest does not get a chance to settle on the leaves of the Ficus houseplant.
