De Chamaerops Humilis

The amazing, tropical Chamaerops Humilis, also called the Dwarf Palm, is the only palm species that has its roots in Europe. The Chamaerops Humilis grows mainly around the Mediterranean Sea. The Chamaerops Humilis has been nicknamed 'Dwarf Palm' because it does not grow as mega large compared to other palm species. This fantastic Chamaerops Humilis is hardy and can withstand the frost well. This makes the Chamaerops Humilis a great indoor and outdoor plant. Do not be alarmed when the Chamaerops Humilis has pinched or curved leaves. This is a well-known feature of the Palm and gives it its lush appearance. Because the Chamaerops Humilis grows in the wind on the coast, the palm protects itself by snapping the leaf. In this way, the Chamaerops Humilis prevents an entire branch from breaking off with every strong gust of wind. Smart, huh?

Pitch

As mentioned, the Chamaerops Humilis originates from an area where the sun shines just a bit more often than in the Netherlands. The Chamaerops Humilis can therefore withstand some sunlight and loves to stand in full sun. Therefore, preferably place the palm in a sunny location and make sure that the potting soil always remains slightly moist, especially in the summer.

Water

The soil of the Chamaerops Humilis may always remain slightly moist. Especially in the summer with hot days and lots of sun, the Chamaerops Humilis will process the water faster. With hot days, the Chamaerops Humilis may even receive some water several times a week. You can best measure the humidity of your Chamaerops Humilis by feeling a little deeper into the earth with the fingers. If the soil here is already very dry after a few days, then it is time for a new watering. Is the soil of your Chamaerops Humilis still moist from last time? Then you better wait a while. If you want to put the Chamaerops Humilis in an ornamental pot in the garden, it is important to check whether there are drainage holes in the ornamental pot. For example, the excess water, such as rainwater, can drain well and cannot linger at the roots. If there are no holes in the pot, too much water will remain at the bottom of the pot and this can lead to root rot of the Chamaerops Humilis. Root rot is difficult to remedy and is better prevented.

Discoloration and pinched leaves

Pinched leaves and small holes are well-known features of the Chamaerops Humilis palm. Fortunately, this is nothing to worry about.  Because the Chamaerops Humilis grows up on the coast in the wind of the Mediterranean Sea, the plant has found a way to protect itself from the strong winds. The Chamaerops Humilis snaps its leaves to prevent an entire stem from breaking off with every gust of wind. By snapping the leaf, the palm ensures that the wind can glide along the leaves and thus does not cause any damage. The Chamaerops Humilis grows from the middle. New leaves grow as a small fan and will unfold themselves when large enough. The lower leaves of the Chamaerops Humilis are the oldest leaves that have grown first and will therefore be rejected first. You can recognize this by the yellow or brown color. Dying leaves are better pruned quickly. This prevents dying leaves from consuming a lot of energy that the healthy leaves can use better. Prune the leaf as close as possible to the trunk with sharp scissors or a sharp knife.

Repotting the Chamaerops Humilis

We recommend repotting the Chamaerops Humilis every two years. The Chamaerops Humilis palm does not have to be hoarded immediately upon delivery. The Chamaerops Humilis can remain in the cultivation pot for another two years so that its roots can become a bit bigger and stronger. If you decide to transfer the Chamaerops Humilis, this must be done in the right way. When you put the plant outside, there should be drainage holes in the ornamental pot so that the water can drain away. It is also good to use hydro grains or stones. When using the Chamaerops Humilis as a houseplant, you should repot the plant using a waterproof inner cover, filler rat and a water meter.

Poisonous

The Chamaerops Humilis is fortunately completely pet and childproof. This makes the Chamaerops Humilis a safe choice when you have children or pets. You can therefore place the Chamaerops Humilis anywhere with peace of mind.
