Trachycarpus is known for its kinked leaves and small bumps on the leaf.
This is because these palms grow on the coast in Spain in the wind and snap their leaves for protection. With this precaution, the palm ensures that an entire stem does not break off with every gust of wind.
The Trachycarpus is a cool outdoor plant that originally grows at high altitudes in the Himalayan mountains. The Dutch nickname of the Trachycarpus is the Henneppalm or Handpalm and it belongs to the Aracaceae family. Trachycarpus is a well-known garden plant because of its beautiful fan-shaped leaves. The Trachycarpus is a hardy palm that will survive our winters outside very well!
Trachycarpus is a real sunbather and needs this light intensity to stay beautiful and healthy. However, this also makes it a thirsty plant! It is beneficial to give the Trachycarpus some extra nutrition during the summer months. That way you will support its growth and development. Use palm food for this and never give more than the recommended amount.
As mentioned, Trachycarpus is a thirsty garden plant and especially in the summer months it needs some water every day. In summer, the soil should absolutely not dry out, but beware of too much water. If there is too much water, the leaf tips will turn brown or black. When this happens, you can prune these leaves. Then adjust the water quantity by giving a little less. In the winter months, the soil may dry out a little between waterings. Because less sunlight shines on the plant during the winter months, it will also use less water.
The ideal position for Trachycarpus is in a place with as much sunlight as possible. Both indoors and outdoors, this plant can be placed in full and direct sunlight. Make sure you choose a spot out of the wind and draughts. This is because the leaves are more likely to break. As mentioned, Trachycarpus is hardy and this means that this lovely palm will survive temperatures down to -18 degrees Celsius. We do recommend bringing the palm inside at such temperatures or protecting it with special winter covers.
No, the Trachycarpus is not poisonous and therefore animal friendly. However, we advise against consuming the leaves or incorporating them in food.
