The Syngonium is originally a real climbing plant and originally comes from the tropical rainforests of Costa Rica. The Syngonium is a family of the Araceae and you can recognize it by its special leaf shape with unique leaf drawings. The shape of the leaves is arrow-shaped, but the shape of the leaves changes as this plant ages. This houseplant is a very easy to care for houseplant and therefore certainly suitable for people with less green fingers. The Syngonium is in nature a fast grower that in the rainforests can easily reach heights of 10 to 20 meters, they climb along trees to this height. Indoors, however, they will not reach these heights because they do not have a grip on trees, for example.

Watering the Syngonium

As mentioned, the Syngonium is  an easy to care for houseplant, you should water the Syngonium about once a week. This houseplant likes a moist surface but be careful not to give it too much water. The Syngonium is better to be a little too dry than too wet. With too much water, he will get wet feet and this increases the chance of root rot, of course you want to prevent this! In spring and summer the Syngonium has  its growth period, in this period the houseplant is developing and needs more water than in the autumn and winter months. It is better for the Syngonium to give it lukewarm water instead of cold water. The amount and frequency of watering is different for each Syngonium and depends on different factors such as; the ambient temperature, the light intensity and the size of the pot. We advise you to  keep an extra eye on the Syngonium in the first weeks after purchase  and to check the potting soil regularly. If you notice that the soil feels a bit dry 3 days after a watering, you can give it a bit more water next time. However, if you notice that the soil is still very wet after 5 days, it is better to water less at a next watering.

 Spraying the Syngonium

Due to the tropical origin of this houseplant, it is good to spray it with some regularity. The Syngonium likes a somewhat humid environment and this is often not the case in our living rooms. That is why it is good to help him with this. You do this by not only keeping the soil moist but also by moistening its leaves with a plant sprayer.

The best location for the Syngonium

The Syngonium loves the necessary light and warmth, but the full sunlight is just too much of a good thing for this houseplant. We recommend placing the Syngonium near a north-facing window or in a place with sufficient indirect sunlight. It is also important that you do not place this houseplant near a heater. The Syngonium likes high humidity and a heater provides dry air. Also put this houseplant in a draft-free spot, this reduces the chance of pests. In terms of temperature, you do not have to take this houseplant into account, the minimum daytime temperature is around 16 degrees Celsius and at night this is 12 degrees Celsius. The Syngonium is therefore perfect for the living room but less suitable for greenhouses and / or garden rooms. When you give the Syngonium the right care, you also get something in return with this plant. The Syngonium is an air-purifying houseplant and it will do its best to make the air quality in the room as good as possible.

Help! The leaves of my Syngonium discolour

Even though the Syngonium is  an easy houseplant in terms of care, it can always happen that it does not have a good time. When this is the case, he will show this through his leaves. When the leaves of the Syngonium start to hang, this is a sign of too little water. In this case, do not give him a large amount of water at once but give him small amounts several times, so that the Syngonium can  absorb the water better. With too much sun, the leaves will become pale and will no longer have a powerful green color. When the Syngonium is too dark, no flowers will grow, move the Syngonium in this case.

Pruning the Syngonium

Pruning Syngonium will not be necessary quickly because this houseplant does not grow very quickly indoors. If this houseplant grows where you do not want, this is easy to solve. You can safely cut off the unnecessary suckers / stems and bring it into the desired model. If the Syngonium gets brown or dried leaves, you can also just cut them off, so it will continue to look fresh.

 Multiplying  syngonium

The Syngonium can be propagated by means of cuttings. To do this, use a top cutting of about 12 centimeters. Cut off the lower leaves but make sure that 3 to 5 leaves remain on the cutting. Place the cutting in a pot and then cover it with plastic, this will keep the humidity and heat high. The minimum temperature for a cutting is 20 degrees Celsius. Let the cutting air every day by removing the plastic briefly. The 'baby Syngonium' will automatically grow into a full-fledged Syngonium.

Is the Syngonium a poisonous houseplant?

Unfortunately, the Syngonium is  a poisonous houseplant, so it is not very suitable if you have small children or curious pets. We do not recommend touching or consuming the plant. If the Syngonium is still eaten, we advise you to contact a doctor.

Common diseases in the Syngonium

The Syngonium will not easily suffer from pests or other diseases. Nevertheless, it can always happen that the Syngonium suffers from louse. When you notice this, you could initially spray the plant with a somewhat harder jet. If this does not work, we recommend that you treat the Syngonium with a chemical or biological pesticide.

Repotting the Syngonium

We recommend that you repot the Syngonium once every two years. The Syngonium will probably grow to a height of about 30 centimeters in your living room. By repotting this houseplant, it will also grow in width and get a fuller appearance. If you  are going to repot the Syngonium, we advise you to do it in the spring. Any damaged roots can recover better in these seasons. We recommend that you take a pot with a diameter that is at least 20% larger than its predecessor. When repotting, just use universal potting soil and if you have a high pot / container, we recommend that you use a bet cover. This insert cover prevents the water from rotting at the bottom of the pot, which can eventually lead to root rot.

Extra power supply

The Syngonium is a houseplant that likes to get an occasional 'nutrition boost'. Especially in the summer months he likes to get a cap of the plant food. Add this cap of plant food to the water you give it during a watering. We do not recommend that you give the Syngonium extra food in the winter months. In the winter months, this houseplant consumes less energy and then it will not be able to absorb the nutrients, so that it remains in the ground. The food is quite acidic and if it is not absorbed by the plant it will affect the roots.
