The Caryota Mitis has a special appearance and is an odd man out in its family, the palm tree. As an indoor plant, it does not bear much resemblance to it, but when you allow it to grow, its roots become recognisable. The plant originated in South-East Asia but nowadays it can be found in almost all tropical environments. This palm can grow to a height of up to 12 metres! Due to its slow growth this will not happen in your space. A funny nickname for this plant is the fishtail palm. This is due to its somewhat unusual leaves which resemble the tail of a fish.
The fishtail palm loves plenty of water. Make sure the soil is always moist but not soaked with water. Watering its fishtail will benefit the plant. It particularly likes this in winter when the air is a little drier, because the fishtail palm is, after all, a tropical plant.
A characteristic of the palm family is that they love (a lot) of water. This fishtail palm likes a constantly moist soil. In summer, you can water the plant once every five days; in winter, this is considerably less and once every ten days is sufficient. Since this plant's growing season falls in summer, it also needs more water at this time of year.
As far as its location is concerned, Caryota Mitis is not the most difficult of plants. This plant does well in a light but also in a shady spot. In doubt about the location? The plant will indicate this itself. If few new leaves appear on the plant, it is often too dark. If the leaves change colour, the plant is too light.
The Aspidistra Caryota Mitis is not poisonous and is therefore a good combination with children and pets.
