The Geldboom plant originates from the marshlands of South America but can now be found in almost all continents. In Asia, the Money Tree plant is extremely popular because this tree is seen as a magnet of happiness and money, hence its name the Money Tree Plant.

The real name of this plant is Pachira Aquatica it is an easy plant for the house and because of its braided trunk it is also a super hip houseplant.

Watering the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree Plant

As mentioned, the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant is an easy to care for houseplant. The pachira aquatica care also differs slightly from many other houseplants. The Geldboomplant only needs a good splash of water once every three weeks. The Geldboomplant stores water in its trunk. Before you water the Geldboomplant, the soil must first be dried out, this houseplant can easily be overwatered and then the chance of root rot is quite high. In the summer months, this houseplant may get a little more water than in the winter months. In the winter months, the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant is in its resting period.

The amount and frequency of watering is different for each Geldboom plant and depends on various factors such as; the ambient temperature, the light intensity and the size of the pot. We advise you to keep an extra eye on the Geldboomplant in the first weeks after purchase and to check the potting soil regularly. If you notice that the soil feels a bit dry 1 week after a watering, you can give it a bit more water next time. However, if you notice that the soil is still very wet after 2 weeks, it is better to give less water at a next watering.

Watering the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree Plant

In the winter months we recommend spraying the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant. In the winter months, the humidity in most living rooms is lower by using a stove or heating. Too low humidity will cause leaf loss, to prevent this we recommend that you  lightly spray the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant once a week. Spraying also ensures that the dust is removed from the leaves and any pests. Spraying therefore ensures that the plant becomes more beautiful and remains healthy.

The best location for the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant

The Pachira plant likes the necessary light and heat, but the full sunlight is just too much of a good thing for this houseplant. We recommend that you place the Grass Lily near a north-facing window or else in a place with indirect sunlight. The Geldboom plant needs 3 to 5 hours of light per day to stay healthy and to be able to develop properly. It is also important that you do not place this houseplant near a heater. The Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant likes a higher humidity and a heater provides dry air. Also put this houseplant in a draft-free spot, this reduces the chance of pests. It can happen that the leaves of the Geldboomplant turn yellow in color, this is a sign of too much light. In this case, move the plant to a spot with less (bright) sunlight. When the plant is too dark, it will produce few new leaves and of course you want to prevent this. The leaves attract happiness and money! In this case, move the Geldboomplant to a lighter location

In terms of temperature, you do not have to take this houseplant into account, the minimum daytime temperature is around 14 degrees Celsius and at night this is 10 degrees Celsius. The Pachira plant is therefore perfect for the living room but can also stand well in a conservatory and / or garden room

Make sure that it does not stand in the bright sunlight. And perhaps more importantly, don't forget to bring it in when the temperatures drop again.

Repotting the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree Plant

We recommend that you repot young Pachira plants once a year. Older specimens that have a height of 120 centimeters should be repotted once every two years. However, it is important to provide the Geldboom plant with a new top layer with fresh soil every year. Remove the top centimeters from the soil and fill the pot with new soil.

If you are going to repot the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant, we advise you to do this in the spring. Any damaged roots can recover better in these seasons. We recommend that you take a pot with a diameter that is at least 20% larger than its predecessor. When repotting, just use universal potting soil and if you have a high pot / container, we recommend that you use a bet cover. This insert cover prevents the water from rotting at the bottom of the pot, which can eventually lead to root rot.

Giving the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree Plant extra nutrition

The Pachira Aquatica Money Tree Plant is a houseplant that likes to get an occasional 'nutrition boost'. Especially in the summer months he likes to get a cap of the plant food. Add this cap of plant food to the water you give it during a watering. Never give more food than indicated. We do not recommend that you give the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant extra nutrition in the winter months. In the winter months, this houseplant consumes less energy and then it will not be able to absorb the nutrients, so that it remains in the ground. The food is quite acidic and if it is not absorbed by the plant it will affect the roots.

Help! The leaves of my Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant are discoloring

Even though the Pachira AquaticaGeldboomplant is  an easy houseplant, it can always happen that it does not have a good time. When this is the case, he will show this through his leaves. When the leaves of the Geldboomplant turn brown in color, this is a sign of too much water or a shortage of water. This can lead to leaf loss, but leaf fallout can also be caused by too dry air. With too much sun, the leaves will turn yellow in color and will no longer have a powerful green color.

A healthy Pachira Aquatica Money tree plant has dark green leaves and (in the growing season) regularly gets new baldlings.

 Pruning the Pachira Aquatica

You can hardly prevent the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree from getting brown leaves, because this is a natural process in which the old leaves are repelled. You can safely cut off these old leaves from the plant so that it gets a fresh appearance again. It is also nicer to  prune the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant back to the crown every autumn. This way the plant remains nice and compact without long suckers. If you do not prune the Geldboom plant, only a long trunk without leaves will remain after a while.

Propagating the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree Plant

The Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant can be cut in two ways. Occasionally, the plant will get small suckers at the bottom of the trunk. You can remove these small plants and if they already have roots you can place them directly in a new pot. If the cutting does not yet have roots, we recommend that you first put the cutting in the water or moist soil so that it will take root before you put it in a new pot.

The second way to cut the pachira aquatica is by means of a head cutting. To do this, cut off a spur with 2 or more petioles at the top of the plant. Then let this cutting root in the water or in the moist soil. When the cutting has a number of roots, you can put it in the ground.

For cutting the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant, however, you need a long breath because it will take a while before the cutting is the same size as its mother.

Is the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree Plant a poisonous houseplant?

This houseplant is slightly poisonous although in some countries the leaves are consumed after they have been cooked. We strongly advise against consuming this houseplant and/or the leaves or incorporating them into food.

Common diseases in the Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant

The Pachira Aquatica Money Tree plant does not easily suffer from pests or other diseases. Nevertheless, it can always happen that the Geldboomplant suffers from louse or spider mite. When you notice this, you could initially spray the plant with a somewhat harder jet. If this does not work, we advise you to treat the Geldboom plant with a chemical or biological pesticide.
