How much light does my plant need?
In general, most plants need light to feel comfortable in their own skin. There are also plants that prefer to be in the shade. Although we would like the sun to shine all day, this is not always good for your green plant friends.
Each plant is slightly different and needs a different amount of sun. Take a cactus for example, this plant comes from the desert and is used to direct sunlight. And so you also have plants that grow in the shade and do not like to stand in the sun. In general, you can divide the plants into the following categories:
- Direct sunlight
- Half shade
- Shadow
Direct sunlight
Sun, sun and more sun. When a houseplant needs a lot of sun, it is best to place it on the windowsill towards the south. Even if your plant wants direct sunlight, always keep a close eye on it because in the summer it can sometimes get hot under his feet and then of course he does not like it so much anymore. It is good to know that plants are grown under 'normal light' and it is therefore not useful to put a new plant directly in full sun. Therefore, gradually place it more and more towards the window.
Half shade
Does your plant like to be half in the shade? Then he keeps for the other half of the sun. In this case, place the plant about 2–3 meters from the window on the north. Of course, he can also stand next to the window, then he will also be half in the shade.
Shade
Nobody likes to be in the shade all the time and the same goes for the plants. In this case, it does not mean that the plant should always be in full shade, but that the light intensity should remain low. In short, a little sun makes everyone happy. So also your plant!
So, do you now know a bit where to place your plant? To make it easier for you, you can of course also use a compass. But just look at your green friend every now and then to see how he stands and on the basis of that you might be able to move him up a bit or give him a different spot.
