The Trachycarpus is an indoor and outdoor plant that originally grows in the Himalayan Mountains at high altitudes. The Dutch nickname of the Trachycarpus is Henneppalm or Handpalm and it belongs to the Aracaceae family. The Trachycarpus is a well-known houseplant because of its beautiful fan-shaped leaves. The Trachycarpus is a hardy plant that will survive our winters outside just fine! The height of the plant will be between 230-220.
The Trachycarpus is a real sunbather and needs this light intensity to stay beautiful and healthy. However, this also makes it a very thirsty plant! It is beneficial to give the Trachycarpur some extra nutrition in the summer months. This way you will support its growth and development. For this purpose, use Palms food and never give more than the recommended amount.
As mentioned, the Trachycarpus is a thirsty houseplant and especially in the summer months it needs water every day. In summer, the soil should absolutely not dry out but also beware of too much water. You should avoid a layer of water in the pot, this will not be beneficial for the Trachycarpur. If there is too much water, the tips of the leaves will turn brown or black. Adjust the watering if your Trachycarpur suffers from this. In the winter months the soil may dry out a little between waterings and because there is less sunlight in the winter months it will also need less water.
The ideal location for the Trachycarpur is in a place with lots of sunlight. Both outdoors and indoors, you can place this plant in full and direct sunlight. Make sure that you choose a location out of the wind and drafts, because this will cause the leaves to break down sooner. As mentioned, the Trachycarpur is hardy and this means that this plant will survive temperatures down to -10 degrees Celsius. If temperatures drop further we advise you to bring the palm inside or protect it with special winter covers.
The leaves, trunk and juices of the Trachycarpur are absolutely non-toxic and it really is a pet-friendly plant. However, we recommend that you do not condense the leaves or process them in food.
