    The Peperomia means in Greek; "resembling peppers". However, this houseplant does not look like the peppers that we know today. However, the Peperomia is  distantly related to the pepper plant hence this meaning. This houseplant cannot be described in one way because there are around 500 different Peperomia species as a houseplant. However, the Peperomias generally all have thick and sturdy leaves. Due to the variety and beauty of its leaves, the Peperomia is  a popular houseplant. On average, the Peperomias do not grow higher than 30 centimeters. The leaves of this trendy houseplant can actually have all the colors of rainbow. The Peperomia family is therefore a very diverse plant family. Originally this Peperoma comes  from the Amazon jungles of South America. In nature, more than 1600 different types of Peperomias grow.

    In Brazil, this plant is often given as a gift to encourage people. The Peperomia is a symbol of happiness in Brazil.

    What all types of Peperomia have in common is that they are very easy to care for. In addition, it is also a fairly strong plant, in short, the ideal plant for any room. 

    The water requirement of the Peperomia

    Due to the somewhat thicker leaves of the Peperomia, this houseplant consumes little water. This is because this houseplant evaporates little water due to the thickness of the leaves. However, the Peperomia needs a constantly moist soil, make sure that the roots do not get into the water. Watering the Peperomia once a week  is often sufficient. In the first weeks, keep an eye on whether you do not give too much or too little water. Check with your fingers a few days after a watering whether the soil is still moist. If not, give him some extra water next time. 

    Originally, most Peperomias are  epiphytes, these plants grow on wood or other organic residues. Don't worry the Pepromias are nowadays adapted to the living room conditions and can just stand in the open potting soil.

    The right humidity for the Peperomia

    The Peperomia originates from the tropics and it is therefore really a tropical houseplant. Because of its origin, the Peperomia likes  a somewhat higher humidity. In the colder months, this can become a bit difficult due to the heating in our homes. Due to too dry air, the leaves can turn brown in color, get brown spots and / or curl. This is of course not the intention, but you can easily prevent this! First of all, we recommend that you spray this houseplant with water with some regularity. When you have the heating on at home, you could put a bowl / bowl of water on the heater so that it evaporates a bit. This makes the humidity in the room a bit higher and the Peperomia will  remain beautiful and healthy.

    The perfect location for the Peperomia

    This houseplant prefers to be in a light spot but not in full sun. For the Peperomia's , the more variegated the leaf is, the more light the Peperomia needs. In spring and summer, this houseplant can also be placed outside. Note that the temperature always remains above 12 degrees and that it does not stand in the bright sunlight. Also, it is better to protect this houseplant from temperature fluctuations and drafts. So keep this in mind when choosing a spot. 

    Repotting the Peperomia

    It is not necessary to repot the Peperomia. If you still want to repot it because you want to grow it or because you want to put it in another pot, we recommend that you do this in the spring. This allows the possibly damaged carrots to recover during the spring and summer. In these seasons, the Peperomia develops faster because this is its growth period. It is better to  buy  a wider pot for the Peperomia than a higher one. This houseplant will not grow so quickly in height but rather in width. We advise you to  repot the Pepromia once every three years, after all, it is not a fast grower!

    Feeding the Peperomia

    If you want your Peperomia to get  an extra 'growth boost', you can give it some extra nutrition in the spring and summer. Only do this in spring and summer because these are the seasons in which the Peperomia grows. We recommend that you give the Peperomia the food that is suitable for cacti. Give this houseplant some extra nutrition once a month but never more than prescribed. When the Peperomia gets too much extra nutrition, the roots will be damaged. This is not beneficial for the plant and it can even die from this.

    Propagating the Peperomia

    Because there are so many different species, the ease and way of propagation depends on the species Peperomia. In general, it is fairly easy to cut. Always do this in the spring or summer when he has a lot of strength. For most types of Peperomias you only need one leaf and a piece of stem. You then insert this into the ground, make sure that 2/3 of the leaf continues to protrude above the ground. Place this 'baby plant' in a light but not sunny place. After a few weeks you can see the first growth.

    Is the Peperomia poisonous?

    The Peperomia is not poisonous, taking into account where you put it is not necessary because it is an animal and child-friendly plant. As far as is known, it is safe to gnaw the leaves, but we do not recommend this! 

    Diseases that occur in the Peperomia

    The Pereromia is a strong plant and, due to its origin in the jungle, has built up an immune system that is not afraid of our Dutch insects. Of course, it can always happen that your houseplant gets a spider mite infection. This houseplant will show this because the leaves become brown and barren. When you notice this, you can buy a biological or chemical pesticide to kill these little critters. You could also spray the Peperomia with a homemade control. You make these by mixing water with some green soap and a very small amount (read 1%) of spirits. We advise you to carry out the control in the evening hours because then the eggs hatch. Spider mite loves a warm and dry environment, so as a precaution you could adjust the humidity and temperature.
