Sansevieria

The Sansevieria or according to the original name the Dracaena trifasciata originates from Africa. In the Netherlands we call this houseplant the Vrouwentong and in Belgium it is also called Wijventong. The Sansevieria is one of the strongest houseplants you can buy and can only be "dead" by too much water. It is a special houseplant and recognizable by the sturdy, pointed leaves that grow upright. The leaves of the Sansevieria have another advantage besides that they are very beautiful. The leaves contribute to a higher humidity in the room. Higher humidity is good for your eyes, skin and respiratory tract. In short, a houseplant with many advantages!

Care of the Sansevieria

This houseplant is easy to maintain and does not need much water due to its African 'roots'. It is also a really strong houseplant. So also suitable for the caregivers among us with slightly less green fingers.

The water needs of the Sansevieria

Sansevierias consume very little water and when in doubt about the watering, it is better to skip it once. The soil may be dry before you water the Sansevieria again. When this houseplant is given too much water, there is a chance of root rot and of course you do not want this!

The amount of water also depends on the size of the plant and the light intensity. The larger the houseplant is, the more water it can absorb. The amount of water you give the Sansevieria also depends on the place you give this houseplant. When the Sansevieria has a place near a south-facing window, it needs 2 to 3 times as much water as a north-facing window. In winter, the Sansevieria can go up to a month without water. During spring and summer, once every two weeks is sufficient. In the beginning, probe how often and much you water your Sansevieria.

Spraying the Sansevieria is not necessarily necessary. However, it can have advantages. By spraying the plant you remove the dust from the plant and this improves the health of the leaves. When spraying, make sure that the soil does not get too wet.

The perfect location for the Sansevieria

The location does not matter much for the Sansevieria. A lot of sun or a lot of shade, he doesn't really care. However, light is essential for the growth and leaves of the Sansevieria. We do not recommend a complete shade to promote the beauty and growth of the Sansevieria.

The location of the Sansevieria has an effect on the color of the leaves. In a sunny spot, the leaves will become a bit lighter in color. In a place with more shade, the leaves of this houseplant will become a bit darker.

In addition to the fact that the Sansevieria contributes to better air quality, this houseplant also removes toxic substances such as formaldehyde and carbon dioxide from the air. The Sansevieria gives you oxygen back instead. Therefore, feel free to give the Sansevieria a place in your bedroom!

Repotting the Sansevieria

Over time your Sansevieria will grow, if you want it to continue to grow then you have to repot it. When purchasing, it is best to repot the Sansevieria immediately and add new potting soil. The houseplant then has enough nutrients and space to develop.

Are you only going to repot the Sansevieria after a year or more? We recommend that you do this in the spring. Spring and summer are the growing seasons of this houseplant. This allows the roots that are damaged during repotting to recover a lot faster. During a repotting it is best to add new potting soil, so that the plant has new nutrients that it can feed on. When repotting, always choose a pot that is at least 20% larger than its predecessor, so that the Sansevieria can grow well. A large pot has even more advantages; because of the larger pot there are more nutrients in the soil and you will have to water your houseplant less often because the Sansevieria can build up a water buffer.

The Sansevieria will be around 150cm if you just let it run its course.

Pruning the Sansevieria

We do not recommend pruning the Sansevieria and it will not be necessary because it is a slow grower. When you prune this houseplant it will stop growing and of course you do not want this! If the houseplant really becomes too large, you can cut off the outer leaf from the root.

What is really nice about this houseplant is that it can bloom in your living room! Unfortunately, it often does not happen, but of course there are always lucky people among them. However, the flowers cost the Sansevieria a lot of energy, so we advise you to cut off the beautiful flowers anyway.

Multiplying the Sanseviera

The Sansevieria is also a good houseplant to propagate. This can be done by cuttings or cracks. Before cutting, cut off a piece of 10cm and let it root in the water. Cuttings is a method that will take a little longer before you have a real plant. For the tearing method, take a new leaf out of the ground with roots and all. If you have a piece with a lot of roots, you can plant it directly in the ground. If not, let the piece of the plant root in the water first. When the plant has developed enough roots, you can also place them in the potting soil.

A fun fact; In Africa, the leaves of the Sansevieria are used in different ways. The locals make baskets and other utensils from this. This shows once again how strong this houseplant is.

Giving the Sansevieria extra nutrition

Because the Sansevieria is a slow grower, it also needs little nutrition. If you want to give your Sansevieria an extra nutritional boost, do this only in the spring or in the summer with liquid food. Also give only 1/4th of the indicated amount that is on the package. When you give too much, the soil can become acidic, which can damage the roots.

Diseases in a Sansevieria

Rarely does this houseplant have to deal with diseases. If there is a louse on the leaves, use a water sprayer to remove it. If your Sansevieria still has to deal with unwanted guests, we advise you to combat this immediately. This can be done with a chemical or biological agent to remove pests.

Is the Sansevieria poisonous?

Like many other houseplants, the Sansevieria is slightly poisonous. Touch can not hurt but eating or nibbling the leaves is really not recommended. This can lead to stomach and intestinal complaints.

Different types of Sansevieria

In total, there are more than 70 different species that belong to the Sansevieria family. All these species differ from each other in terms of leaves and color. There are gray, green and yellow but also twisted and rosette-shaped types of leaves. Also in terms of size, there is a correct size for each place. There are Sansevierias with a diameter of 10cm but also of 25cm and in height ranging from 30cm to a maximum of 150 cm.

We at Green Bubble have a nice assortment containing the most popular specimens. Namely:

  • Sansevieria Fernwood Punk

Its name already reveals the appearance a bit, this houseplant has some lush leaves that stand out in different directions.

  • Sansevieria Laurentie

The Sansevieria Laurentie is a houseplant with a somewhat wider diameter. The leaves are beautiful with a lot of variety. For example, the outer edges are yellow and the inside is drawn by different patterns.

  • Sansevieria Zeylanica

The Zeylanica is a full brother of the Laurentie, the only difference is that this houseplant has no yellow outer edges.

  • Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado

This relative of the Sansevieria has less wide but thick leaves. The somewhat pointed leaves are each unique and have their own beauty.

All these species originate from the continent of Africa, from Nigeria to Congo. Nowadays, the Sansevieria is mainly imported from Costa Rica, Thailand and China.
