The Aloe Vera is originally from Africa and the Arabian Peninsulas. Today, this plant is spread all over the world. For example, the Aloe Vera can be found in the Caribbean, Central America and the Asian countries. The name Aloe is derived from the Arabic word 'alloeh' and the Hebrew word 'allal'. Both words mean, translated into Dutch: bitter substance. The Aloe family includes more than 300 different plant species. The Aloe is a succulent plant with thickened leaves in which the plant stores nutrients and its healing juice.

The Aloe Vera plant is a special plant, not only because of its special and healing side effects but also because of its appearance. This houseplant with its blue-green pointed, prickly leaves resembles a cactus. However, they are not, they are succulents and belong to the affodili family. These houseplants originally grow in poor and dry soil, which is why they are also called 'Desert Lily'. This houseplant is also centuries old, in the 15th century Columbus already used this plant for various purposes. Nowadays the plant is often used as a houseplant but the Aloe Vera also has the nickname as 'Wonderplant'. This is due to the juices that are in the plant which have a healing effect. It could just be that the Aloe Vera will take care of you more than you do for this houseplant.

The water requirement of aloe vera

The Aloe Vera is an easy plant to maintain, this is because it is a succulent plant. A succulent plant is known to store water in a part of its 'body'.

For example, the Aloe Vera plant stores the water in its thick and jelly-like leaves. In the period from April to October, this houseplant needs some water because this is the growing season. A watering is only necessary when the entire soil has dried out. From October to March, this houseplant can soak without water. If you notice that the tips of the plant start to pull together and turn red in color, it is time for a watering. The houseplant will automatically attract again, make sure that no layer of water remains in the pot. Too much water combined with too little light can quickly lead to root rot. However, the amount of water you give the plant does affect the growth process. If the leaves of your Aloe Vera plant discolor, this is the result of excessive water. The leaves turn brown, soft and can even droop.

Spraying the Aloe Vera is not necessary because the plant is naturally used to dry air. However, it is good to occasionally spray the dust off so that the sunlight can reach the plant better.

The perfect location for an Aloe Vera

The Aloe Vera does not care much about its location. On a pitch with partial shade to a pitch with full sun, this houseplant will feel at home everywhere. However, in a lighter location, the Aloe Vera plant will feel finer. Do the leaves of your Aloe Vera plant get a yellow glow? This may be due to too much direct sunlight. The Aloe Vera plant can tolerate direct sunlight well, but you have to let it get used to it gradually.

The Aloe Vera plant would also do well in the garden or on the terrace if it is covered on rainy days. The minimum daytime temperature to keep the Aloe Vera outside is 10 degrees. When you place the Aloe Vera indoors, this houseplant helps to improve the air quality.

Repotting the Aloe Vera

This houseplant can grow considerably under the right conditions and especially in width. Repotting would then not be a superfluous luxury. So if you want the plant to grow larger, we advise you to repot this houseplant every two years. The best period for this is spring. Any damaged carrots can then strengthen best during the upcoming growing season. The Aloe Vera plant likes to be well rooted, so do not repot the houseplant to a pot that is too large. When repotting, make sure you have enough fresh potting soil, here are enough nutrients to be able to grow nicely. After repotting this houseplant, wait a few days before watering.

Pruning the Aloe Vera

Is your Aloe Vera getting too big or do you want to model it? No problem, pruning this houseplant is easy. This houseplant has the gift to heal itself. After you cut off a leaf, a membrane comes over the 'wound', this membrane becomes a rubbery layer within a few minutes. This layer protects the plant against moisture loss and ensures that the plant can continue to live.

Propagation of the Aloe Vera plant

The Aloe Vera plant can be propagated by picking the 'offshoots' of the mother plant. These suckers are attached to the bottom of the mother plant. Let the small leaves dry for three days and place them in a pot with a mixture of sand and compost. Do you want your plant to grow faster? Place the cutting in a plastic bag so that the humidity is higher and it will grow faster.

Extra nutrition for aloe vera

This houseplant grows naturally in poor soil, and aloe vera also consumes few nutrients. Extra plant nutrition is therefore not really necessary. If you want to give your houseplant an extra boost, do this in the spring. Spring and summer are the growing seasons of this houseplant. This extra boost will make your Aloe Vera grow extra hard. Give the Aloe Vera preferably nutrition for cacti, universal plant nutrition is also possible. Use only 1/4 of the recommended amount to prevent damage to the roots.

The flowering of aloe vera

The Aloe Vera can get beautiful flowers when it comes into bloom. The houseplant will bloom after a short rest period in winter when the days get longer again. The flowers originate from the heart and grow straight up on long stems. These flowers are often red or yellow in color. In nature, the Aloe Vera is in bloom for an average of 3 months a year. Unfortunately, this will not happen quickly inside, but who knows, you might find it with your Aloe Vera plant.

Common diseases in an Aloe Vera

The Aloe Vera is a strong plant and with proper care, this houseplant will not quickly suffer from diseases or other pests. If this does occur, it is best to treat the plant with a biological or chemical pesticide.

From Wonderplant

The Aloe Vera plant is also called the Wonder plant and that is not for nothing. Several medical studies show that the juice in the Aloe Vera plant has several active substances. For example, the gel of the plant helps with skin diseases, wounds, burns and eczema. However, the intake of the juices to strengthen the immune system has not been proven. It can also have a laxative effect. The Aloe Vera plant is therefore absolutely not toxic but has positive effects on the human body.

Don't you want these benefits too? The juice of your Aloe Vera plant can be obtained in different ways. The houseplant must first be large enough, by which we mean; at least 12 leaves. Then you can cut off one of the lower leaves and squeeze out the juice. You could use the juice directly on e.g. a burn.

Another way is to put the leaf down after which you cut off the sides. Then you also cut the leaf in half so that you can scoop out the juice with the help of a spoon. But beware if you cut too close to the leaf surface , aloin juice may appear. This juice is yellow in color and can irritate the skin.

If you think it's a shame to use the juice of your Aloe Vera plant? At many drugstores you can buy products in which Aloe Vera juices are processed. Such as: gel, shampoos, creams and even deodorant.
