The Begonia

The Begonia is a special houseplant and there are about 1900 different species. This large group can be divided into two groups: the flowering Begonia and the Leaf Begonia. The flowering Begonia comes into bloom and produces the most diverse flowers from orange, white, yellow to pink and even multicolored. The Leaf Begonia does not produce flowers but is known for its super soft leaves with beautiful drawings. Leaf begonias also vary greatly in color, such as bright pink, red and silver specimens. Each leaf is unique and resembles a true work of art. The Begonia is a trendy houseplant due to its wide color palette!

Originally the Begonia comes from the warm and tropical regions of Africa, New Guinea and the Andes. Because the humidity here is high, the plant can develop well in these areas.

Watering the Begonia

The soil of a Begonia should always be moist in the spring and summer months. We recommend that you water small amounts several times instead of a large amount at once, because this tropical houseplant will not be able to absorb this tropical houseplant properly. With too much water he will get wet feet and this increases the chance of root rot, of course you want to prevent this! In the summer months the Begonia will use a bit more water than in the winter months. Water it about 2 to 3 times a week in the summer months, in the winter months 1 time a week is sufficient. If you notice that the soil feels a bit dry 2 days after a watering, you can give it a bit more water next time. However, if you notice that the soil is still very wet after 5 days, it is better to water less at a next watering.

In the winter months, the soil may dry out slightly between waterings. The amount and frequency of watering is different for each Begonia and depends on different factors such as; the ambient temperature, the light intensity and the size of the pot. We advise you to keep an extra eye on the Begonia in the first weeks after purchase and to check the potting soil regularly. If you notice that the soil feels a bit dry 1 week after a watering, you can give it a bit more water next time. However, if you notice that the soil is still very wet after 2 weeks, it is better to give less water at a next watering.

Spraying the Begonia

Due to the tropical origin of this houseplant, it is good to spray it with some regularity. The Begonia likes a somewhat humid environment and this is often not the case in our living rooms. That is why it is good to give him a hand with this, spray this houseplant with some regularity to stimulate its development. If you have your Begonia near a heater, we advise you to spray it even more.

The best location for the Begonia

The Begonia loves the necessary light and warmth, but the full sunlight is just too much of a good thing for this houseplant. We recommend placing the Begonia near a north-facing window or else in a place with indirect sunlight. We also recommend that you do not place this houseplant near a heater. The Begonia likes high humidity and a heater provides dry air. Also put this houseplant in a draft-free spot, this reduces the chance of pests. In terms of temperature, you do not have to take this houseplant into account, the minimum daytime temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius and at night this is 14 degrees Celsius. The Begonia is therefore perfect for the living room but less suitable for greenhouses and / or garden rooms.

Repotting the Begonia

We recommend that you give Begonia a new jar once every two years. By repotting this houseplant, it will also grow in width and get a fuller appearance. If you are going to repot the Begonia, we advise you to do this in the spring. Any damaged roots can recover better in these seasons. We recommend that you take a pot with a diameter that is at least 20% larger than its predecessor. When repotting, just use universal potting soil and if you have a high pot / container, we recommend that you use a bet cover. This insert cover prevents the water from rotting at the bottom of the pot, which can eventually lead to root rot.

Giving the Begonia extra nutrition

To keep the Begonia as beautiful and healthy as possible, we strongly recommend that you give this houseplant extra nutrition. To do this, use food for Foliar begonias or Pokon for flowering Begonias. When a Begonia comes into bloom, it will consume a lot of energy and extra nutrition is not a superfluous luxury. Be careful with the amount of nutrition you give the houseplant, the food is quite acidic and if it is not absorbed by the plant it will affect the roots.

Help! The leaves of my Begonia are discolouring

Even though the Begonia is a fairly strong houseplant, it can always happen that it does not have a good time. When this is the case, he will show this through his leaves. Often discolored leaves are a result of a water surplus. If several leaves discolour at once, we advise you to always check the soil. The leaves will get brown or yellow edges and spots in the event of a water surplus. The leaves can also fall out completely. Discolored leaves are not always the result of poor or improper care. The leaves can simply be old, you can easily cut off these old leaves so that your Begonia gets a fresh look again.

Pruning the Begonia

In general, the Begonia does not need to be pruned, because it will not grow much larger. However, you can safely cut off old leaves and flowers, this will increase the ornamental value of the plant and saves energy. This way the Begonia can give its energy to its beautiful colors, drawings and new flowers.

Multiplying the Bergonia

The Begonia is a houseplant that is easy to cut and clean, so there are so many different species. A large number of Begonias can be propagated by inserting a leaf with a stem in the ground. You have to take care of a moist environment, otherwise the leaf will not be able to make roots. To get the humidity as high as possible, we recommend that you put a plastic bag around the jar.

The flowering of begonia

As mentioned, there are two types of Begonias: the Leaf Begonia and the Flowering Begonia. However, the Leaf Begonia is also able to get flowers, but these are less noticeable and will only cost a lot of energy. We recommend that you remove the flowers from the Leaf Begonia. The flowers of the Leaf Begonia last a long time and will bloom throughout the summer.

Is begonia a poisonous houseplant?

When touched, the Begonia is not a poisonous houseplant, but the juice of Begonia is poisonous. So make sure that children and curious pets do not nibble on the leaves. The juice of the Begonia can cause irritation if it comes into contact with a wound or dry hands
