Originally the Citrus tree comes from the Mediterranean and Southeast Asia and it is one of the oldest cultivation crops in the world, these trees have been cultivated for about 4000 years.
Watering the Citrus Tree The watering at the Citrus tree is somewhat different than with "normal" houseplants . The Citrus tree is used to dry periods interspersed with periods of rain. So prevent that the soil is not too moist. It is best to put your finger up to 2 knuckles deep in the ground. When the soil feels dry, you can add some water. You can do this by buying a pot with a hole at the bottom (or making this hole yourself) and filling the bottom of the pot with Hydro granules. The amount and frequency of watering is different for each Citrus tree and depends on different factors such as; the ambient temperature, the light intensity and the size of the pot. Propagating the Citrus Tree If you want to grow small Citrus trees, there are several ways to do this. The first way is cutting, for this you take a shoot of about 25 centimeters. It is best to take an 'old' shoot where a new shoot grows. Then you plant this cutting deep in soil so that only the top leaf bud still protrudes above the potting soil. Then place the cutting for a few weeks in a warm and light place with high humidity. It is best to put a plastic bag around the cutting to keep the temperature and humidity high.
The second way to multiply is to deflect. Here you bend a branch of the large plant towards the ground and make sure that it also remains in the ground. You can do this by means of strings or stones. When bending, it is important that the surface is loose so that the stem can root quickly and easily. After about 3 weeks you can cut the branch from the large plant and it will continue to grow independently.
A third way to propagate is cuttings from a fruit kernel. You first grow the seed in water so that 'water roots' develop. As soon as a tuft with roots is created, you can put the cutting in the ground. However, this last method takes a lot of time and does not always work.
The flowering of the Citrus tree The Citrus tree has a flowering around the end of May early June, there will be white / pink or orange flowers. When the temperature is good and the summer continues long, there is a good chance that fruits will grow on the tree, so you can say that the Citrus tree is a flowering houseplant . Common diseases in the Citrus tree The Citrus tree is quite sensitive to pests such as wool and scale. You can combat this preventively by spraying the Citrus tree regularly and placing the plant in a wind- and draft-free place. If your Citrus tree does suffer from pests, we advise you to treat it with a biological or chemical pesticide.
Repotting the Citrus Tree You should repot the Citrus tree when the current planter becomes too small. This is the case if the plant itself is two to three times the size of the pot in which it stands. If you are going to repot the Citrus tree, we advise you to do this in the spring or in the spring. Any damaged roots can recover better in these seasons. We recommend that you take a pot with a diameter that is at least 20% larger than its predecessor.
