The Citrus trees are known and appreciated worldwide for their fruits. In addition to the fact that the fruits are used for many different purposes, the Citrus tree is also a very nice room or balcony plant. The Citrus tree can be placed outside in the summer months, in the autumn and winter months you can better bring this colorful tree inside. The Citrus tree is a fragrant plant because of its beautiful brightly colored fruits. In May and June, the Citrus tree will have white/pink flowers from which the brightly colored fruits will grow.

Originally the Citrus tree comes from the Mediterranean and Southeast Asia and it is one of the oldest cultivation crops in the world, these trees have been cultivated for about 4000 years.

    Watering the Citrus Tree

The watering at the Citrus tree is somewhat different than with "normal" houseplants. The Citrus tree is used to dry periods interspersed with periods of rain. So prevent that the soil is not too moist. It is best to put your finger up to 2 knuckles deep in the ground. When the soil feels dry, you can add some water. When the Citrus tree develops fruit, it consumes a lot more energy and also needs more water.

We also recommend that you incorporate a drainage system into the pot for the Citrus tree. You can do this by buying a pot with a hole at the bottom (or making this hole yourself) and filling the bottom of the pot with Hydro granules. When you put the Citrus tree indoors in the winter months, it is best to put a plate under the pot so that the water is collected. In the winter months, the Citrus tree needs water less often than in the summer months.

The amount and frequency of watering is different for each Citrus tree and depends on different factors such as; the ambient temperature, the light intensity and the size of the pot. We advise you to keep an extra eye on the Citrus tree in the first weeks after purchase and to check the potting soil regularly. If you notice that the soil feels a bit dry 3 days after a watering, you can give it a bit more water next time. However, if you notice that the soil is still very wet after 5 days, it is better to water less at a next watering.

    Spraying the Citrus Tree

We certainly recommend that you spray the Citrus tree with some regularity. This ensures that the plant can produce better fruit and retain it for longer. In the winter months, the air indoors can also be dry due to heaters. In the winter months it is certainly wise to spray your Citrus tree.

Spraying also helps to keep the leaf clean and remove the dust, so you also reduce the chance of any pests

The best location for the Citrus tree

Naturally, the Citrus tree is used to warm and drier climates. In Spain, for example, the Citrus tree receives sunlight all day long. This sunlight allows the Citrus trees to develop well and stay healthy. In the Netherlands there is less sun and the sun is less powerful here, so the Citrus trees have more difficulty with their development. It is therefore important that the Citrus tree is in a place with as much sunlight as possible and preferably in full sun. A spot by the south-facing window or in the garden in a sunny spot are preferred. Sunlight is essential for the growth and development of the fruits.

If you place the Citrus tree outside, make sure that it stays out of the wind.

The Citrus tree is not a fan of large temperature changes, so do not move it too often from the inside to the outside. The minimum temperature during the day is 15 degrees Celsius and at night it is 0 degrees Celsius.

    Propagating the Citrus Tree

If you want to grow small Citrus trees, there are several ways to do this. The first way is cutting, for this you take a shoot of about 25 centimeters. It is best to take an 'old' shoot where a new shoot grows. Then you plant this cutting deep in soil so that only the top leaf bud still protrudes above the potting soil. Then place the cutting for a few weeks in a warm and light place with high humidity. It is best to put a plastic bag around the cutting to keep the temperature and humidity high.

The second way to multiply is to deflect. Here you bend a branch of the large plant towards the ground and make sure that it also remains in the ground. You can do this by means of strings or stones. When bending, it is important that the surface is loose so that the stem can root quickly and easily. After about 3 weeks you can cut the branch from the large plant and it will continue to grow independently.

A third way to propagate is cuttings from a fruit kernel. You first grow the seed in water so that 'water roots' develop. As soon as a tuft with roots is created, you can put the cutting in the ground. However, this last method takes a lot of time and does not always work.

The flowering of the Citrus tree

The Citrus tree has a flowering around the end of May early June, there will be white / pink or orange flowers. When the temperature is good and the summer continues long, there is a good chance that fruits will grow on the tree, so you can say that the Citrus tree is a flowering houseplant . The flowers of the Citrus tree are therefore the first signs of the brightly colored fruits.

Help! The leaves of my Citrus tree are discolouring

Discolored leaves are often a sign of an excess of water. When the leaves turn yellow-brown in color, we recommend that you water the plant less. It is also possible that the Citrus tree cannot lose its water. So we really recommend that you make a hole in the bottom of the pot (if this is not present) and fill the first layer with Hydo granules.
When the leaves of Citrusboom get brown edges that will curl up, it has a shortage of water. Do not give a large amount of water at once because he cannot absorb this. We recommend that you administer small amounts several times.

Is the Citrus tree a poisonous houseplant?

The Citrus tree is non-toxic and therefore really an animal and child-friendly houseplant. Please note that when you purchase a Citrus tree, the fruits that were already on the tree are not consumed / processed in food. These fruits can be chemically treated.

Common diseases in the Citrus tree

The Citrus tree is quite sensitive to pests such as wool and scale. You can combat this preventively by spraying the Citrus tree regularly and placing the plant in a wind- and draft-free place. If your Citrus tree does suffer from pests, we advise you to treat it with a biological or chemical pesticide.

    Repotting the Citrus Tree

You should repot the Citrus tree when the current planter becomes too small. This is the case if the plant itself is two to three times the size of the pot in which it stands. If you are going to repot the Citrus tree, we advise you to do this in the spring or in the spring. Any damaged roots can recover better in these seasons. We recommend that you take a pot with a diameter that is at least 20% larger than its predecessor. When repotting, just use universal potting soil and if you have a high container / pot, we recommend that you use a bet cover. This insert cover prevents the water from rotting at the bottom of the pot, which can eventually lead to root rot.

Giving the Citrus tree extra nutrition

It is wise to give the Citrus tree a 'nutritional boost' when it produces fruit, this happens in the growing season which runs from March to September. Making these fruits costs the plant a lot of energy. Never give more nutrition than indicated, because too much nutrition will not be absorbed and is harmful to the roots of the plant. In the winter months it is not necessary to give the Citrus tree extra nutrition. In the winter months, the Citrus tree is at rest and consumes little energy.
