The Aspidistra is originally found in the mountainous areas of Japan and Taiwan, in these areas the Aspidistra is mainly a ground cover. Due to its origin from the mountains, this houseplant is  very easy to care for, because it does not need much. The Aspidistra is not a demanding houseplant and does well in a place without too much light, you have little to worry about.

The Aspidistra is really a hufterproof houseplant that is ideal for people with less green fingers.

The name Aspidistra comes from the Greek word "Aspid" this word can be freely translated into "Shield" in English. He owes this name to the shape of his leaves. The leaves of the Aspidistra are long and quite narrow, dark green in color and feel a bit leathery. These leaves come out of the ground in tube-shaped rosettes. The leaves of this houseplant are also regularly used for flower arranging, because the leaves remain beautiful for weeks and retain their deep green color. In the Netherlands, this houseplant is also called the Kwartjesplant.

    Watering the Aspidistra

As mentioned, the Aspidistra is absolutely not a demanding houseplant, so watering this plant is also a breeze. The Aspidistra has no problem with irregular watering and also does not need much water. It is important that you never give the Aspidistra too much water, because it does not like wet feet. This houseplant will remain at its best when you let the soil dry out slightly between waterings. When the ground cracks, you have waited a little too long with a new watering. Do not give a large splash of water in one go, but start with small amounts so that the soil can absorb it better. If you are unsure whether your Aspidistra needs some fresh water again, we advise you not to wait a little longer. This houseplant can better withstand drought than a surplus of water. The amount and frequency of watering is different for each Aspidistra and depends on different factors such as; the ambient temperature, the light intensity and the size of the pot. We advise you to keep an extra eye on the Aspidistra in the first weeks after purchase and to check the potting soil regularly.

This houseplant is also ideal for people who are often away from home, also for a longer period of time. Give the Aspidistra a good splash of water on departure and it will survive 2 to 3 weeks without watering!

    Spraying the Aspidistra

It is not necessary to spray this houseplant, but it can be good for its health and development to spray it once a month. This ensures that any pests do not get a chance and the dust is also removed from the leaves. This will keep the leaf beautiful and the leaf will become beautifully shiny.

The best location for the Aspidistra

By nature, the Aspidistra is a ground cover and this means that it grows plants, among other things. The Aspidistra is therefore naturally a plant that survives well in a place with little sunlight. Nevertheless, this houseplant needs some sunlight to stay healthy, artificial light is not enough for this. It is best to give the Aspidistra a place near a north-facing window. When the Aspidistra gets too much sunlight, its leaves will yellow. In terms of temperature, you also do not have to take into account this strong houseplant, the minimum temperature during the day is 12 degrees and at night it is 5 degrees. You could therefore also place this houseplant in a garden house or greenhouse. Make sure you bring it back inside in time.

Help! The leaves of my Aspidistra are discolouring

Even though the Aspidistra is a strong houseplant and you have little to worry about it, it can always happen that the Aspidistra is not feeling well. When this is the case, he shows this through his leaves, but this will not happen quickly. The leaves of this houseplant can become light in color or even yellow, in this case move the houseplant to a place with a little less sunlight.

The Aspidistra can also get brown spots or edges, this is a sign of an excess of water. Less in this case the water application the leaves will automatically recover.

    Pruning the Aspidistra

Pruning is often not necessary with this houseplant, because the Aspidistra does not grow very large. If you see that some leaves are less beautiful due to, for example, brown edges, you can safely cut them off. This saves the plant energy and keeps it looking fresh.

    Multiplying the Aspidistra

This houseplant can be propagated by means of cracks. With a knife, stick a section with enough roots out of the ground and place the small Aspidistra in a warm and humid environment. Because of the heat and humidity you have the best chance of survival. You have to be patient when tearing the Aspidistra, because it will take a while before he is the same size as his mother.

Is the Aspidistra a poisonous houseplant?

The Aspidistra is definitely not a poisonous room flat, so it is really animal and child-friendly houseplant. In the Far East, the leaves are even used to present food. The leaves themselves are not eaten.

    The flowering of the Aspidistra

The Aspidistra rarely blooms as a houseplant, the flowers of the Aspidistra are star-shaped and purple in color. They grow out of a ball and open just above the ground. So they are not really ornamental flowers. If your Aspidistra does come into bloom, you are a real lucky bird! You don't have to do anything else with the flowers, they disappear by themselves.

    Common diseases in the Aspidistra

The Aspidistra does not easily suffer from pests or other diseases. Nevertheless, it can always happen that the Aspidistra suffers from louse. When you notice this, you could initially spray the plant with a somewhat harder jet. If this does not work, we recommend that you treat the Aspidistra with a chemical or biological pesticide.

    Repotting the Aspidistra

The Aspidistra is not a fast-growing houseplant or a houseplant that will quickly shoot into the height or width. The Aspidistra will be between 50 and 70 centimeters high. Repotting is therefore not really necessary quickly, if you still want to repot your Aspidistra, we advise you to do this in the spring or in the spring. Any damaged roots can recover better in these seasons. We recommend that you take a pot with a diameter that is at least 20% larger than its predecessor. When repotting, just use universal potting soil and if you have a high container, we recommend that you use an insert cover. This insert cover prevents the water from rotting at the bottom of the pot, which can eventually lead to root rot.

    Giving the Aspidistra extra power

The Aspidistra grows slowly and therefore consumes little nutrition. It is therefore not necessary to give this houseplant extra nutrition, but it will benefit health and development. If you want to give your Aspidistra an extra boost, we advise you to give the Aspidistra some extra nutrition in the spring and summer months. To do this, use the liquid food for indoor plants, never give more than indicated on the package. Too much extra nutrition can be harmful to the roots of the plant. The food is quite acidic and this can easily affect the roots.
