The Polyscias is a real jungle plant that originally comes from Africa and Asia. Another name for the Polyscias is Aralia, these two names are used interchangeably but refer to the same plant. A fun fact, in Greek 'Polyscias' means a lot of shade. This refers to the fact that the Polyscias offers a lot of shade, because in nature this plant can grow into a jerk of a tree.

In terms of care, this houseplant requires  a little more energy than other houseplants, but when you bring the Polyscias into your home, a piece of rainforest comes to your living room! Besides the fact that this tropical houseplant looks great, the Polyscias converts carbon dioxide into oxygen, an air-purifying houseplant!

Water requirements of the Polyscias

The water requirement of the Polyscias is important for its growth and health, the watering of this houseplant is quite accurate. In the summer months the soil should always be moist, the soil should absolutely not dry out between waterings. We recommend that you give small amounts of water several times, which is better than one large amount at once. This will allow the Polyscias to absorb the water better and prevent a layer of water from forming in the pot. A layer of water in the pot can cause root rot and this will really not benefit the Polyscias aralia! In the winter months, the soil may dry slightly between waterings before you apply new water. We advise you to water once a week, if you notice that the soil is already dry after two days, you can give a little more water next time. If the soil is still wet after five days, you can give less water in the future.

You can easily determine with your fingers whether your Polyscias is ready for the next watering. Go up to two knuckles deep into the ground and feel if the soil is still moist, water if necessary.

The amount and frequency of watering depends on several factors, such as: the size of the plant, the size of the pot, the location and the ambient temperature. So always check what is the best frequency and quantity for your Polyscias.

Spraying the Polyscias

In addition to watering, we also recommend that you spray this houseplant regularly, because the Polyscias is a houseplant that likes high humidity. High humidity will benefit the health of Polyscias! When this houseplant is in an environment with low humidity, there is a chance that its leaves will turn yellow and they will eventually fall out. Spraying also helps prevent lice and spider mites, but it also helps to remove the dust from the leaves. A dust-free leaf will receive more light, making the color more beautiful and stimulating growth.

The best location for the Polyscias

This houseplant prefers a sunny location and is absolutely not sensitive to direct sunlight. The Polyscias does not like to change his location and he has to get used to a new place. When purchasing, there is a risk of leaf failure because it has been moved to a completely new environment, the Polyscias goes into 'shock' and leaf failure is not crazy. In the winter months when the days are shorter and there are fewer hours of sunshine, it is important that the Polyscias still gets enough light. So resist him if necessary when he shows leaf fall in October. This houseplant is a real warmblood the minimum temperature during the day is 18 degrees and at night this is 12 degrees. So it really is a tropical houseplant!

The leaves of my Polyscias discolour

When the leaves of the Polyscias discolor, this is often a sign of wrong care of your polyscias aralia fabian. On the leaves of this houseplant can sometimes form a whitish limescale, a shame because this causes a dull effect. This is because the water with which the Polyscias is watered contains a high concentration of lime. If your Polyscias aralia suffers from this, you can solve this by watering it with rainwater or decalcified water.

Yellow leaves are a sign of too much water or too little light. With a surplus of water, the Polyscias will drop leaves. So really make sure that you do not give too much water during the care of your polyscias fabian, this will not benefit his health! So if your Polyscias loses leaves, check whether the plant is in a good place, and take into account regular watering of the plant.

Is the Polyscias (Aralia) a poisonous houseplant?

This houseplant is not toxic at all, so you do not have to pay attention to where you put this houseplant. The Polyscias is truly a child-friendly and animal-friendly houseplant. So, for example, do you have a cat in the house? Then you don't have to worry. The Polyscias is not toxic to cats.

Common diseases in the Polyscias

This houseplant is naturally susceptible to diseases and pests because the plant wants high humidity and often does not get it in the living room. This makes the Polyscias an ideal target for spider mites, leaf and scale. Fortunately, spider mite can easily be removed by spraying the Polyscias with a powerful water jet, be careful not to damage the leaves. Louse can be removed with a biological or chemical pesticide. You can also do this preventively once a quarter.

When the Polyscias is infected you can often see this but you can also smell it, the plant will produce a strong smell as a natural reaction against pests.

Pruning the Polyscias houseplant

If your Polyscias gets too high or if you want more suckers, you can easily cut off the leaves and branches. It is best to do this in the spring or summer. We also recommend that you trim the Polyscias every year just before autumn. For example, more light can reach the core during the winter months and there will be more branches in the spring. This in turn ensures that the Polyscias keeps a full appearance.

The Polyscias (Aralia) cuttings

This houseplant can be propagated by means of cuttings. The suckers on top of the plant are best suited for this, cut off a piece of about 10 centimeters. You put this piece in the water at a temperature of 23 degrees. If you want to cut your polyscias, we recommend that you put a plastic bag over the cutting to increase the temperature and humidity. When the cutting has created roots, you can place it in the ground. Mind you, patience is a very nice thing!

The Polyscias in bloom

The Polyscias can produce beautiful flowers, unfortunately this only happens in nature or you have to be a real lucky bird. Before the Polyscias comes into bloom, it must have reached a certain age and size. The living environment also plays a major role in the flowering of the Polyscias. Given that the conditions in a living room are often not optimal for the Polyscias, the chance is therefore very small.
