These beautiful Calathea species are members of the Marantaceae family. This family originates mainly in the subtropics of Brazil. The Calathea is also called the 'living plant' or the 'prayer plant'. The Calathea owes this nickname to the fact that its leaves fold back in the evening, pointing upwards like a praying hand. As if the Calathea did not have enough nicknames yet, there is a third. The Calathea is also called the 'Shadow plant' because it likes a shady spot.
The Calathea is very easy to care for. However, the Calathea is not called the 'Shadow plant' for nothing. The Calathea likes to stand in the shade and can hardly stand direct sunlight. The ideal houseplant to fill up a dark corner! Because of its tropical origins, the Calathea loves to be sprinkled regularly. This keeps the air humidity in the room high.
The Calathea likes to stand in slightly moist soil at all times. We advise you to give small amounts several times to prevent a layer of water from staying at the bottom of the pot, as this can cause root rot. It is possible that your Calathea gets lime stains. Give the plant rainwater or boiled water. The spots will disappear by themselves. We also advise you to water your Calathea at least once a week. By spraying the leaves you will create a higher humidity around the plant. This will benefit its health and development. When the leaves hang or curl, this is a sign of a shortage of water. In this case, it is best to water the plant more often.
The Calathea likes to be placed in a shady spot. The plant cannot tolerate much sunlight. In the winter months, the plant can be placed a little closer to the window, but you should still avoid direct sunlight.
The Calathea is not poisonous and is therefore animal and child friendly.
