Air plants are very special houseplants because they literally live on air. The air plants are family of the Tillandsia and there are about 500 different species. They also each have their own size and appearance. There are very small air plants but also varieties of up to 25 centimeters. Air plants have no or hardly any roots and do not have to be in potting soil. In nature, these hip houseplants grow  in Central and South America and Mexico where they can be found on rocks, trees or other plants. It may sound like you don't have to worry about this houseplant, but that's not entirely true. The air plants do need some care and of course love!

    Watering the Air Plants

Air plants also need water to stay alive and they can't get the water out of the air. Because the air plants have no roots and are not in the ground, it is of little use to water them with a watering can. You need to water this houseplant in a different way than the 'normal' houseplants.

Air plants prefer rainwater and preferably not too cold. The air plant will also do well when 'normal' it gets tap water, but the tap water must be hand-warm.  The gray colored air plants should be watered once a week and the green colored air plants need a watering about twice a week. You can water these special houseplants in two ways. The first way is to spray the air plants, put some water in a plant sprayer and spray your air plant with it. Air plants are rather sensitive to water and must be 'dried off' after such a spraying. If too much water remains between the leaves, the air plant will rot. You can also gently hold this houseplant upside down after a spray and shake off the water.

The second way to water the air plant is to put them 'in the bath'. Fill a container or sink with water and place the plants here for about 10 minutes. Now also make sure that the water is hand warm. It is important that the air plants are dried well after their bath, you can put them on a tea towel or towel to dry them. Some air plants also have flowers. In this case, it is important that the flowers are not flooded when they bathe the air plants or they will rot.

The amount and frequency of watering depends on the humidity and location of the air plant. When the leaves start to curl, you know for sure that he needs fresh water because this is a sign of dehydration.

    Air

An important factor in the care of the air plant is the air. These plants are not called air plants for nothing. The air plants get a lot of their food from the air, so they absolutely should not be in a closed container / pot. There should always be an opening in the pot so that they get enough fresh air.

Furthermore, air plants do not like too dry air. We therefore recommend that you do not hang/place these houseplants above or near a heater or stove. The most ideal place for an air plant is in a place where the air is ventilated. Make sure that there is not too much cold outside air at the plants. In the summer months you can also put the air plants outside if the weather is of course good. Fresh outside air often does the air plants well. Make sure you do not put them in full sun.

The best location for an air plant

Air plants, like many other houseplants, like sufficient light. By means of light, the air plants can convert water and nutrition into glucose, among other things, so that they can grow well and develop. Direct sunlight is too bright for most variants, so put them in a place where there is enough indirect sunlight. When you have just watered the air plants, they can not withstand bright light at all, the leaves will burn quickly.

The lighter the color of the air plant, the better they can withstand sunlight, so the gray variants can withstand sunlight better than the green variants.

In terms of temperature, the air plants are not the most difficult, they can survive at temperatures between ten and forty degrees Celsius. However, a temperature around twenty degrees Celsius is a good temperature for the air plants. When the temperature gets higher, you have to water the air plants more often, take this into account.

Giving the air plants extra nutrition

We advise you to give the air plants extra nutrition, you do this by means of special air plants spray. In addition to the fact that this spray contains water, it also contains minerals that promote the flowering and growth of the plant. Air plants are sensitive to too much nutrition, so be careful with this. Also make sure that when you feed the air plant, you do not water it separately afterwards. This air spray is available at Green Bubble and can easily be ordered from your air plant.

    Flowers of the air plant

Air plants regularly get beautiful flowers, so you can say that the air plant is a flowering houseplant . The flowers come from the heart of the plant on a long stem. The flowers are very beautiful and often purple in color. The flowers are not very large but very unique. Be careful that the flowers do not get wet then they will rot.

    Air plants and their 'pups'

After the air plant has come into bloom, it can have babies, this is called puppies with the air plant. On the side between the leaves grows a small air plant. These puppies do not grow very fast but as soon as he is about two thirds of his mother's size then you can gently turn him off. It can sometimes be that the 'mother' puts so much energy into her puppy that she dies herself, so there is a chance that the air plant will die itself after you take the baby off.
