The Acalypha hispida is originally from the Southwest of Asia, but the natural variants do not have such a pronounced appearance as the cultured versions. In nature, however, the Acalypha hispida becomes a lot larger than indoors, because they can (under good conditions) grow up to fifteen meters high! Today, the Acalypha hispida is  actually found in all tropical areas. In the fifties this houseplant was  extremely popular, nowadays it is still a trendy houseplant due to its special appearance. The nickname of this houseplant is 'Cattail' and this is not for nothing. The plant has long flowering spikes that hang down, because even though these bloomers are colored, they look like the tail of a cat. This is where the Acalypha hispida gets its nickname. Furthermore, the Cattail is an easy houseplant to care for and will clearly indicate when he is not having a good time.

    Watering the Acalypha hispida

As mentioned, the Acalypha hispida is  an easy to care for houseplant, you should water the Acalypha hispida about once a week. This houseplant likes a moist surface but be careful not to give it too much water. The Acalypha hispida is better to be a little too dry than too wet. With too much water, he will get wet feet and this increases the chance of root rot, of course you want to prevent this! In spring and summer the Acalypha hispida has  its growth period, in this period the houseplant is developing and needs a little more water than in the autumn and winter months. We recommend that you water the Acalypha hispida from below so that its flowers do not get wet, it is also better  to water the Acalypha hispida with lukewarm water and not with cold water. The amount and frequency of watering is different for each Acalypha hispida and depends on different factors such as; the ambient temperature, the light intensity and the size of the pot. We advise you to  keep an extra eye on the Acalypha hispida in the first weeks after purchase  and to check the potting soil regularly. If you notice that the soil feels a bit dry 3 days after a watering, you can give it a bit more water next time. However, if you notice that the soil is still very wet after 5 days, it is better to water less at a next watering.

    Spraying the Acalypha hispida

Due to the tropical origin of this houseplant, it is good to spray it with some regularity. The Acalypha hispida likes a somewhat humid environment and this is often not the case in our living rooms. That is why it is good to help him with this. When spraying the Acalypha hispida, make sure  that you only spray the leaves and not the flowers.

The best location for the Acalypha hispida

The Acalypha hispida loves the necessary light and warmth, but the full sunlight is just too much of a good thing for this houseplant. We recommend placing the Acalypha hispida near a north-facing window or else in a place with indirect sunlight. It is also important that you do not place this houseplant near a heater. The Acalypha hispida likes high humidity and a heater provides dry air. Also put this houseplant in a draft-free spot, this reduces the chance of pests. In terms of temperature, you do not have to take this houseplant into account, the minimum daytime temperature is around 16 degrees Celsius and at night this is 12 degrees Celsius. The Acalypha hispida is therefore perfect for the living room but less suitable for greenhouses and / or garden rooms.

Help! The leaves of my Acalypha hispida are discolouring

Even though the Acalypha hispida is  an easy houseplant, it can always happen that it does not have a good time. When this is the case, he will show this through his leaves. When the leaves of the Acalypha hispida start to droop, this is a sign of too little water. In this case, do not give him a large amount of water at once but give him small amounts several times, so that the Acalypha hispida can  absorb the water better. With too much sun, the leaves will become pale and will no longer have a powerful green color. Also, no flowers will grow when the Acalypha hispida is in a too dark place.

    Pruning the Acalypha hispida

Pruning the Acalypha hispida will not be necessary quickly, but if this houseplant grows where you do not want it, this is easy to solve. You can safely cut off the unnecessary suckers / stems and bring it into the desired model. If the Acalypha hispida gets brown leaves, you can also just cut them off, so it will continue to look fresh.

    Multiplying the Acalypha hispida

The Acalypha hispida can be propagated by means of cuttings. To do this, use the new suckers, cut them off and put them in a pot at a temperature of about 20 degrees Celsius. The soil of this pot should be a mixture of potting soil with a little bit of sand. When the cuttings start to get roots, we recommend that you put them in a slightly cooler place, so that growth is promoted.

Is the Acalypha hispida a poisonous houseplant?

The Acalypha hispida is a poisonous houseplant, but when touching the leaves and flowers, little will happen. However, the moisture inside the plant is toxic and can irritate the mucous membranes and skin considerably. Parts of the Acalypha hispida are even used for medical purposes. So be careful with the Acalypha hispida when you have small children and when you are going to prune or cut the houseplant.

The flowering of the Acalypha hispida

The Acalypha hispida is a houseplant that blooms often and for a long time, the ornamental value of the Acalypha hispida is also given by its flowers. From May to November, the Acalypha hispida is actually in constant bloom. It may be that the Acalypha hispida in the living room stays in bloom even longer due to the constant temperature. However, the flowers of the Acalypha hispida are not typical flowers as we know them. This houseplant produces long flowering spikes that hang down. The flowers are often bright pink in color, so you can say that this houseplant is a real eye-catcher .

Common diseases in the Acalypha hispida

The Acalypha hispida does not easily suffer from pests or other diseases. Nevertheless, it can always happen that the Acalypha hispida suffers from louse. When you notice this, you could initially spray the plant with a somewhat harder jet. If this does not work, we recommend that you treat the Acalypha hispida with a chemical or biological pesticide.

    Repotting the Acalypha hispida

We recommend that you give the Acalypha hispida a new jar once every two years. The Acalypha hispida will probably reach a height of 90 centimeters to 110 centimeters in your living room. By repotting this houseplant, it will also grow in width and get a fuller appearance. If you  are going to repot the Acalypha hispida, we advise you to do this in the spring. Any damaged roots can recover better in these seasons. We recommend that you take a pot with a diameter that is at least 20% larger than its predecessor. When repotting, just use universal potting soil and if you have a high pot / container, we recommend that you use a bet cover. This insert cover prevents the water from rotting at the bottom of the pot, which can eventually lead to root rot.
